Cornices and Coving Many rooms, particularly in period houses have decorative plasterwork in the form of cornices and coving. Cornices are the mouldings used to hide the line between the walls and ceiling, while coving is a generic term used for any kind of moulding. They not only enhance the look of a room but they also provide a useful cover for any joins or imperfections in the underlying plaster. Most modern buildings don't use coving because new plasterwork shouldn't contain any cracks or joins if it is applied correctly, but many people choose to add it to their homes purely for decoration and style. Although in the past it was often crafted on site, coving today comes in a variety of pre-moulded shapes from simplistic concave forms to more elaborate Egg and Dart styles. Plastering Rochdale provide a full coving service and will fit your coving to the highest standards. If you already have coving in place we can also renovate and repair any damage. Should you wish for a more modern style to your room we can also remove coving if it no longer fits in with your decor. We can also advise on the best styles and materials for your coving. Plaster Boarding Plaster boards are large panels of gypsum pressed between a facer and a backer. It has replaced the traditional lath and plaster method of finishing walls as it is much quicker and easier to install. It is often used in renovation as a useful way to hide damage or to straighten a wonky wall. It doesn't give as perfect a finish as traditional plaster but requires less skill and time. Much of the expertise of plaster boarding lies in the ability to join the boards together to create a smooth seamless surface. The quality of the jointing will have the biggest impact on the overall standard of the finished job. This is a useful option for those on a budget or who are looking to do the work themselves. Plastering Rochdale are happy to quote for both traditional plastering and plasterboard work and will advise on the best options available to you. Roughcasting / Pebbledash You might be more familiar with roughcasting under its common name of pebbledash. It is a coarse plaster render used on exterior walls consisting of a cement mixed with sand, gravel or pebbles to give a highly textured effect. It was extremely popular on houses in the 1970s and 80s and is generally thought to be outdated today, although like many styles from that period, it's making a comeback. It's a relatively cheap method of rendering and is durable and hard-wearing. Plastering Rochdale offer a full roughcasting service and can also provide solutions for people wishing to get rid of pebbledash from their houses. New textured wall coatings can be applied hiding old and damaged pebbledash and replacing it with a modern sleek look.
